9/4/12 Notes - Using "Issues" and "Volumes"
QUESTION:
What does Volume 6 Issue 5 on the covers of many magazines mean ? What is a volume and how many issues per volume are there ? Why don't they (publishers) just use #1,2,3….instead ?
ANSWER:
Most publications have a 12-month calendar and publish X number of issues in that 12-month period. For daily newspapers, it's 365 issues; for monthly magazines, 12 issues; for quarterly journals, 4 issues. That's what "issue" number refers to.
"Volume" indicates that this is the Nth year of publication. I work for a newspaper whose first issue was printed on April 3, 1897. Therefore, each April 3 edition reads, "Volumne 104, Issue 1," "Volume 105, Issue 1," and so on. Each April 4 edition reads "Issue 2." With me so far?
This is important partly because it indicates to readers how long something has been around. It also is important for researchers and academics citing publications in their work. Somebody citing an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association, for example, simply writes, "Vol. 197, Issue 4, p. 89," and the reader will know immediately roughly how recent that article was. (For example, an article about AIDS that cites a volume number corresponding with 1980 is out of date compared with one from a volume number corresponding with 1999.)
"Volume" and "Issue" designations survive mainly because of traditions. Some publications do use "No." instead of "Issue," but just about everyone uses "Volume" as a shorthand for, "This is our Nth year of publication."
As to how many issues per volume, there's no set number that covers all publications, but as I said, monthlies will typically have 12 issues a year, dailies 365, weeklies 52.
